Existing Swim Academy Members

We’ve worked hard to try and keep the swimming lesson programme the same, however, in order to keep everyone safe, we have had to make some changes in line with the guidance from Swim England and our own operating procedures.

This may have resulted in some of the lessons now being scheduled on different days and times.

Other changes include:-

  • Only one adult should accompany a child under 8 years to the swimming lesson. We ask that you don’t spectate if your child is aged over 8, to limit the number of customers in the centre.
  • Spectators will need to wear a face mask in the centre.
  • Swimmers should come to the pool ‘beach ready’ with swimwear worn under clothing.
  • Teachers will not be able to help with hats and goggles so please ensure your child has these items on ready to start the lesson.
  • Follow the centre’s one-way system. There will be directional arrows on the floor to guide you around the centre.
  • Arrive through the spectator area onto poolside no earlier than 5 minutes prior to your class starting.
  • There will be no access to the changing rooms prior to the lesson.
  • Showers will not be available, so swimmers will need to shower at home please.
  • All swimming teachers will deliver their lessons from the poolside. Additional buoyancy aids will be used to ensure your child’s safety.
  • ALL lessons are now 25 minutes, this includes stages 6-10 (previously 45mins). Please make appropriate arrangements for collecting your children at the correct time.
  • Lessons include a strict 5-minute change over period.
  • Some specialist classes will not be resuming yet, these include Premium 4:1; Water Polo; Synchronised Swimming or Rookie Lifeguard – our apologies about this.

Our annual price increase that was due to take place in April, will come into effect from September and the monthly membership price will now be £26.

What to do next – bury, haverhill, mildenhall & newmarket

All existing Swim Academy members will be emailed with details of what to do, however, if for any reason you haven’t received an email from us yet, please note the following.

-If you wish to cancel your Swim Academy membership – you must cancel at your bank. All Swim Academy membership direct debits will resume on the 8 September.

-To view your new Swim Academy allocated place please log into the Home Portal below (you can find your member ID on your welcome email when you joined). If you are happy with the allocated time and day, you do not need to do anything as we will switch your membership back on automatically.

-If your class has CANC next to it, unfortunately, this means we cannot resume it right now. In this instance, please get in touch if you’d like to join another class or request a move from your allocated place.

-Details of your new Swim Academy allocated place will be emailed to you by Tuesday 8 September. -You cannot log in to Home Portal YET, this will be available when we switch our systems in October/November time.

Every child in our Swim Academy is taught in a safe, supported environment surrounded by caring, qualified teachers. Your child will have the confidence to learn the skills they need and you can feel rest assured.

Firstly children are assessed, free of charge, to determine their ability and which stage they should join at.

Once they join the academy, there’s continual progression and ongoing assessment of individual swimmers through a series of stages throughout the year.

The lessons are usually once a week for approximately 30 minutes, we allow five minutes for administration, registers, updating iPods and checking medical information.

They run for a minimum of 50 weeks per year, with a 2-week break over the Christmas holiday.

There are also extended swimming development pathways, with clearer links to West Suffolk, Mildenhall and Newmarket Swimming clubs and other external options.

Lessons can be paid for monthly by direct debit or by a single annual payment and all Swim Academy pupils are entitled to unlimited free casual swimming:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What changes are there as a result of COVID-19?

We’ve had to make a few operational changes to keep everyone safe and to follow guidance from Swim England. More information can be found at the top of this page.

Can we still use the changing rooms?

Please arrive ‘beach ready’ for your lesson – i.e. swimming suit already under your clothes. There will be no access to changing rooms before your lesson – but you can use the changing rooms after your lesson. Showers will not be available and we ask you to spend the minimum amount of time as possible in the changing rooms.

Do spectators need to wear a facemask?

Yes please, you will need to wear a facemask, in line with government guidance.

How can I book my child in for swimming lessons?

Simply complete the form on this page called ‘Register for Swimming Lessons’ and a member of the team will contact you to get you booked into the right class.

How can I access the portal to view my child's progress?

Click the button link at the top of this page – called Login Home Portal.

I wish to cancel my membership

If you would like to cancel your swim academy membership – we’ll be sorry to see you go.

Please give us one month’s notice in writing – there is a button link further up this page called – ‘Cancel My Membership’. We also advise you to contact your bank and cancel the Direct Debit.

Once the course has started we are not able to issue refunds or transfer lessons. In circumstances where a swimmer is unable to attend the course due to an illness, we are able to issue credit against future courses, if a doctor’s note is provided. A 25% administration charge will be applied to all credits issued.

Why do you run your programme throughout the year?

It has been clearly demonstrated that children progress more quickly in an all year programme. Long breaks, for example, summer holiday periods, can have a negative impact on a child’s progress in swimming lessons. We are also responding to ever changing demands and social patterns such as both parents working and grandparents involved in child care which demands more consistent activity.

How will my child’s progress be assessed?

Our teachers are experienced and qualified to deliver progressive, structured lessons, which follow the national plan for the teaching of swimming. Your child’s progress will be continually assessed which means they can progress at any point rather than having to wait for everyone to meet the criteria.

At Abbeycroft Leisure, we take the progress of our swimmers very seriously. So, if the swimmer’s progress has not been updated after a lesson or if you feel like your child is not progressing, we offer a free assessment with our Swimming Co-Ordinator

Will there be a start date and end date to a term?

Continuous assessment means there are no start and end dates to a term as the programme runs throughout the year with only a two week break at Christmas

Do you run Holiday courses?

At the moment we are not offering holiday courses – but we do hope to have these running again soon.

What if I don’t want my child to have swimming lessons all year round?

If you are paying by direct debit you will be entitled to give 1-months’ notice to cancel your child’s session. The introduction of continuous assessment will make access to your preferred session easier when you decide to return
