How to look after yourself and family using Nutrition, Herbal medicine and Homeopathy:
‘Dr Downing and other physicians from the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine urged preventive supplementation to ‘prevent or minimize symptoms for viral infection, including the coronavirus.’
Vitamin C:
Vitamin C deficiency has been associated with pneumonia and many studies indicate that vitamin C may alleviate or prevent infections caused by bacteria and viruses, particularly upper respiratory conditions.
Dose:
1000-3000 mg daily for adults as maintenance in divided dosages. Halve doses for younger children.Increase to 3-6000mg daily if any flu symptoms develop.
Available as tablets or dissolvable powder for children and easy dosing.
Vitamin D3:
The possible interactions between viral infections and vitamin D appear to be more complex than previously thought. Vitamin D, seems to induce a transient antiviral state by regulating the immune system.
A WHO study in the effect of Vitamin D in Children found that daily smaller doses [300-2000 IU/day] were more effective than single large doses of vitamin D. For this intervention to be effective, it should be done continuously, before the respiratory tract infection starts.
Dose:
2000 ius daily for adults and children over 12 years
800-1000iu for children under 12 years
200-400iu for babies under 18 months
Zinc (citrate or glycinate):
Zinc is an essential trace element that is crucial for growth, development, and the maintenance of immune function (particularly the mucous membranes in the lungs & throat). Zinc deficiency is strikingly common as a result of lifestyle, age, and disease-mediated factors (some medications and contraceptives lower zinc levels).
An abundance of evidence has accumulated over the past 50 years to demonstrate the antiviral activity of zinc against a variety of viruses. The NIH notes that children and the elderly with zinc deficiency have been shown to be more vulnerable to pneumonia and other infections.
Dose:
I recommend adults taking up to 30 mg per day for 2 weeks, then 15 mg per day.
Additional antivirals
Betaglucans – Beta-glucans are naturally occurring sugars. These substances increase host immune defence by activating macrophages and natural killer cell function, making it more difficult for virus’s, bacteria and other invaders to attack our bodies.
Probiotics – Since 70-80% of our innate immune system is held in our guts it makes sense to keep this as strong as possible.
Magnesium – Helps us deal with stress and supports lung function, especially helpful for asthmatics.
Dose: 200-400 mg daily (in citrate, malate, chelate, or chloride form).
Selenium: is an excellent antioxidant. Dose: 100 mcg (micrograms) daily
Echinacea – Echinacea is known as both antiviral and preventive. We know that it works through immune modulation and is also known to be safe and effective for long-term use.
Saccharomyces Boulardii – Saccaromyces can prevent the adhesion of viruses and other pathogens in our respiratory and gut lining, therefore improving outcomes in various infections, as well as calming gut issues such as IBS, Candida and Colitis.
Dose: 200-300mg
N-Acetyl Cysteine – Most people who are hospitalized due to COVID-19 seem to experience breathing challenges. N-Acetyl Cysteine, is a mucolytic agent — which means that it helps to reduce the build-up of mucous in the lungs and other respiratory pathways.
Homeopathy
Is a safe, gentle yet effective way of assisting our immune system and also can help with specific symptoms such as fever, persistent cough and mucous production.
Just as importantly, it can also help to calm our stress responses, which are heightened during this period of uncertainty. E.g. Aconite reduces the production of stress hormones, helps to alleviate fears and worries so we’re able to think more clearly and sleep more soundly.
