HOW YOU CAN HELP
OUR PARTNERS

Background
Using data from the Place Based Needs Assessment, St Olaves ward in Bury St Edmunds was selected for a 31-week pilot programme, to help tackle social deprivation and high inactivity levels by providing accessible health and physical activity within open communal spaces.
Consultation surveys through local resident association groups, supported by the Families and Communities team at West Suffolk Council, helped shape the programme of two key activities – Basic Bootcamp and Community Health Walks.
The programme started on 19 April 2021.
Objectives
Reduce inactivity levels
By removing barriers and offering what people want on their doorsteps
Work with hard to reach groups
By consulting with partners and the community we were able to reach the right people.
Sustainability
By making activity habitual, the aim was to carry on providing activities after the pilot but with a voluntary contribution from participants.

Rachel Ellis
Rachel from Bury started with the programme in April 202.
“If I think back to the start of the programme, I wasn’t very active at all and needed to do something as I wanted to try and lose some weight.
I was definitely over-weight at the time and didn’t feel very healthy.
I remember feeling quite anxious and a bit nervous when I went to the first session as `I didn’t know what to expect, but I didn’t need to worry as everyone was so friendly.
As the programme went on I started to feel stronger and found that I was able to do more for longer. I was also losing weight.
I liked that the sessions were suitable for all abilities and the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed.
I really feel like Move More Outdoors has helped to make exercise part of my life now and I’ve even joined a kick-boxing class.
I feel fitter, stronger and happier with myself.”
Thank you for the classes! I enjoy them a great deal, and it provides a social outlet as well. The instructors are top notch, engaging, fun, and motivating. I especially appreciate being able to exercise outdoors even though I am double vaccinated. The only thing that would make these classes better would be if they were offered more than once per week. I also suggest a better way to communicate class changes either with a texting system, email system, or notifications through the app. When I first started there was a change to one of the classes yet the app still allowed me to book, and no one got in touch with me. Again, thank you so much for providing these community classes. I am so very grateful!”
