The Sporting Memories network of clubs has been running for over ten years in the UK and the sessions are open to everyone over the age of 50, using sports-based reminiscence resources and collections from local groups that rekindle those very special sporting memories and events. Sessions also incorporate appropriate promotion of gentle exercise and physical activity within a fun and relaxed environment.
The latest free, weekly session takes place on Thursdays at Mildenhall Hub from 13:00-15:00 and has been funded by Sport England’s Together Fund which is administered by Active Suffolk. The session is also supported by Abbeycroft’s partner West Suffolk Council who own the award-winning Mildenhall Hub, home to Mildenhall College Academy, Mildenhall Library, Mildenhall Leisure Centre, Lark Family Hub, Little Treasures Pre-School, NHS Health Services and Citizen’s Advice.
Abbeycroft’s Active Communities Manager, Charlie Potter said:
“Following the success of our Sporting Memories session in Sudbury, we were pleased to launch another group in Mildenhall.”
“We already work with many community groups and health partners at The Hub who are helping us signpost into the session, and with so many services under one roof, it’s a real benefit for residents to be able to access everything together.”
“We’re still looking for more volunteers to help run the group, which is such a rewarding thing to do, as it helps people connect and feel valued.”
Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories:
“We’re delighted to see our network of clubs in Suffolk expand with the launch of this new club at the Mildenhall Hub, thanks to the support of Abbeycroft Leisure, Active Suffolk and West Suffolk Council.
“Our clubs provide a warm and welcoming environment for all older people, regardless of background or cognitive ability, to talk about sport but to also improve their physical and mental wellbeing in their local community.
“Following on from the successful launch of our club in Sudbury, it is great to see the next step of offering further club sessions across the Abbeycroft Leisure network.”
Gareth Davies, Director, Active Suffolk:
“Active Suffolk are delighted to support the Sporting Memories initiative through Sport England’s Together Fund. Sporting Memories is a fabulous way of connecting those with dementia through their shared love of sport, sharing stories, creating connections and reducing loneliness and isolation. Importantly, the integration of gentle physical activity supports attendees to keep active. Sport England recognise the power that sport and physical activity can have in bringing people together to tackle inequalities and the Together Fund allows us to do just that.”
Cllr Jo Rayner, Deputy Leader of West Suffolk Council and Cabinet member for Leisure, Heritage and Community Hubs said:
“People’s wellbeing is being served in so many ways with this excellent scheme, and I commend it. It is a great example of how this award winning community hub is bringing people together in different and helpful ways.”
There is no booking required to attend Sporting Memories at Mildenhall Hub, just turn up, Thursdays 13:00-15:00 in the community room next to the cafe.
