Manager with Specialism ( health & safety) - Mildenhall Hub - closes 1 February

About the role
As a Manager with Specialism, you are responsible for day-to-day operations, Health and Safety, staffing and customer experience of the Leisure Centre. You are allocated time to ensure an excellent service is adhered to whilst managing budgets and achieving financial and operational targets. Specialising in Safety you are allocated time to manage Health and Safety at the facility, drive performance and quality of service delivered at your centre whilst Assisting the General Manager and colleagues in the safe operation of the building.

37 hours per week

Salary £23,016.44

About the person
We are looking for a motivated individual who will embrace our “Inspiring a Healthier You” message. The ideal candidate will be committed to managing a team in a very busy and varied working environment. You will need to stay focused, organised, and work methodically in processes for administration and recruitment tasks daily. You will have a focused approach on every customer and colleague you deal with.

Experience & Qualifications required/preferred
Previous experience managing a team within a Leisure environment is desirable. Managing budgets and successfully meeting financial targets. An RLSS NPLQ Qualification, Pool plant operator license and First Aid at work are essential requirements. Those applying without this qualification will have the opportunity to undertake full training and be required to complete within the first 8 weeks.

Abbeycroft have been running our successful Stand Tall™ programme for several years. Can you join us in giving Suffolk’s young people the encouragement and resources to build resilience using the Suffolk Mind Mental Health Toolkit whilst taking part in fun physical activity.

The Stand Tall™ programme is an 8 week programme for 11 -18 year olds who have low feelings, anxiety, stress or lack of motivation. Of those who have previously attended, 84% of them feel less anxious after 8 weeks and 83% identified the positive impact of the physical activity. Most reported better sleep patterns. Abbeycroft is a Suffolk based Social Enterprise helping people in our communities lead a healthier lifestyle and enjoy fun in their lives. This is so important to our young people and we are looking for an enthusiastic lead for the programme.

About the role

You will manage the programme whilst delivering on some of the courses (with others) – as you will enjoy working with young people and seeing the difference you can make. The content uses Suffolk Mind’s Toolkit as well as instruction in enjoyable physical activity – padwork is very popular but not the only offer.

About the person

You will be enthusiastic and responsible. You have an empathy with young people to help them deal with the challenges they face, alongside the ability to create enthusiasm and fun. Hours are flexible and the courses have run in both school hours and out of school – you will arrange your courses and the work.

Training with Suffolk Mind is available – you will build your skills in mental health support to compliment your fitness instructor L2 qualification. We are looking for suitable candidates who understand inclusivity, and diversity, with a flexible approach to a busy and varied working environment – yet be able to be focused on helping every customer and colleague that you deal with. You will need to have good organisational skills, be methodical towards administrative tasks and equally happy with being a team player or working on your own initiative. A DBS enhanced disclosure will be required for this post.

Experience & Qualifications required

You will need to be able to guide young people in activity so will be a L2 Fitness Instructor. Previous experience working with young people is desirable. Training on the Mental Health Toolkit and how to deliver to young people is available.

Hours

20 hours contract (average and flexible) per week – to be agreed dependant on the courses you arrange. Possible to work fewer hours in school holidays and more in term time.

Primarily you will be based in one of our centres with the requirement to travel between our sites across West Suffolk. A primary suitable location of work can be agreed if successful in the role.

The Stand Tall™ Programme has been running for several years, the longevity of the post depends on securing funding which has been forthcoming hence the initial appointment is for 12 months , with the possibility of extension subject to ongoing funding and the continued success of the programme.

Salary

The salary (full time equivalent) is between £20,064.63 and £21,299.37 FTE depending on experience.

Fitness Instructors

Fitness Instructor –Newmarket Leisure Centre – Closes 2 February

About the role
Our fitness instructors are responsible for motivating our customers and helping them achieve their goals. The role will require you to carry out the day-to-day operations of the fitness suite, including customer inductions and programme reviews. You will be responsible for the opening and closing of the gym as well as delivering classes and group fitness activities. You will also be required to complete daily cleaning and maintenance tasks. There may be opportunities to lead group fitness classes and personal training (subject to availability and holding the relevant qualifications).

12 hours per week
Week 1 Mon 10-2pm Tues 9-1pm Fri 10-2pm
Week 2 Tues 10-2pm Weds 9:30-1:30pm Thurs 10-2pm

You will be a motivator and will love everything about fitness. About Newmarket Leisure Centre
Newmarket Leisure Centre was upgraded in 2020 as part of a £1.8m investment to provide new facilities for the town. The new facilities included our first dedicated E-gym, a new soft play and party area, a new café, and new studio and gym space. The centre also has two pools, a sports hall and fitness studios. Leisure Assistants

Leisure Operations Apprenticeship – Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre - closes 27 January

About the role
The role of a Leisure Team member is to support, enhance and deliver day to day operations and services of a leisure/fitness facility. Working as part of a team it is responsibility of the leisure team member to undertake a range of operational duties such as assisting with opening and closing, undertaking routine maintenance of equipment, and maintaining cleanliness and safety of the environment. You will be learning the role whilst gaining a range of qualifications as a Leisure Team Member Apprentice.

35 hours per week – 6 hours of the 35 will be allocated for Study time
Week 1 Monday to Friday 07:30-15:00pm
Week 2 Monday to Friday 14:00-21:30pm

Salary
Your hourly rate in your 1st year of your Apprenticeship will be £4.81 per hour, uplifted to between £8.21 and £9.50 in your 2nd year (dependant on age).

Qualifications that will be gained in this apprenticeship
• Swim England Level 2 in teaching or an STA Level 2 certificate in Swim Teaching
• NPLQ/IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding
• Level 3 certificate in First Aid
• Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction

A leisure assistant is responsible for lifeguarding our pools, the safety of anyone in the water, maintaining excellent cleanliness standards as well as helping with equipment set-ups and set downs. All aspects of the role require great customer service interactions.

The qualification requires you to be able to jump/dive into deep water, tread water for 30 seconds, surface dive to the deepest part of the pool (1.8m), Swim 100m continuously on front and back, Swim 50m in less than 60 seconds as well as climb out of the pool unaided.

I’m the centre manager at Brandon Leisure Centre. I started as a leisure assistant – then went onto duty officer, duty manger, operations manager, sports centre manager and now leisure centre manager.

The oportunties are here if you want to take them and you can also do all sorts of training – NPLQ, first-aid, NVQs in leisure management etc.

I was very much into martial arts and football so for me this was such a natural career choice becuase I love fitness but you don’t need to have that interest – you just need to like people.

The best part of the job is working with our customers, getting people to their personal best is very rewarding but also some customers just love the social side of being here and that’s a great, positive environment to work within.

KIM 

I started as a fitness instructor in 2009 with Abbeycroft – then I did some class instructing and trained as a personal training.

I then progressed to a GP referral instructor, a coordinator and then onto pulmonary and cardiac rehab – so I’m now a qualified  Phase 4 GP referral coordinator.

I’ve benefitted from many courses and qualifications with Abbeycroft so I’m very grateful and proud of my progression.

I love seeing the start and the finish of what our GP referral clients achieve – for example a man who came to us after having a stroke had a goal to walk his daughter down the aisle and we were able to help him achieve that.

We get to work with so many different people and every day is different and that’s part of what is appealing. Abbeycroft is very flexible and understanding if you’ve got a family, so this helps a lot of us Mums return to work.

ANDY

I’m a fitness instructor and I used to be a leisure assistant. I love meeting different people, finding out what they want to do – and this inspires me to help them and improve their lifestyle.

Fitness has always been part of my life – I’m actually a professional swimmer, having qualified for Rio but was unable to go because of a heart condition – but I have my sights set on Paris 2024.

Best of my job is interacting with customers and developing a rapport – everyone knows your name here – I love that.

I also enjoy using the facilities myself – and Abbeycroft are so good at helping me to fit in my swim training as well as do my job.

TOBY

I’m a health and wellbeing practitioner at Brandon and Newmarket,  overseeing our Active Living referral scheme, dealing with all clients who are referred to us by clinicians.

It’s such a rewarding job becuase we see first hand what a difference exercise and movement can have with these clients – you can’t help but love it.

I’ve had so many opportunities during the last 10 years with Abbeycroft – having had lots of fitness roles. They’ve fnded all the qualifications I’ve taken which is excellent and I would encourage anyone who wants to do something worthwhile as a career to try it.

I’m a fitness instructor at Brandon Leisure Centre and for me the best part of my job is helping people achieve their goals. I’ve always found the flexibility of the hours great to be honest – and it’s such a happy environment.

I used to work in the construction industry but I’m a people’s person so this job is perfect for me.
